Study in South Koreafor Indian Students After 12th

A calm, complete guide for Indian students on undergraduate admission, eligibility, scholarships, and visa — written to be read, not skimmed.

Updated 15 July 2026 15 min readBy Prabakaran Srinivasan

Every year, thousands of Indian students finishing Class 12 look beyond India's borders for higher education, and an increasing number are asking a very specific question: can I study in Korea after 12th? The short answer is yes. South Korea accepts Indian students directly after Class 12 for undergraduate programmes at accredited universities. However, there are specific conditions, and understanding them clearly before you apply can save you from costly mistakes.

This guide covers exactly what you need to know about eligibility, admission requirements, language tests, scholarship access, visa documentation, and costs — so you can make an informed decision about studying in South Korea after your board exams.

    Chapter 01

Can Indian students study in Korea after Class 12?

Yes. Korean universities accept students who have completed 12 years of schooling (10+2 in India). Class 12 completion, whether through CBSE, State Board, or ISC, meets the basic academic entry requirement for undergraduate admission in South Korea. The admission cycle runs twice a year — the March intake (spring semester) and the September intake (autumn semester) — giving Indian students flexibility in timing their application.

Two conditions must be simultaneously satisfied for most universities and the GKS scholarship:

    • Your Class 12 result must meet the university's GPA threshold. Most Korean universities and the GKS scholarship require a score percentile of 80% or above, or a ranking within the top 20% of your graduating class.
    • You must meet the language requirement of the programme — TOPIK (Korean proficiency test) for Korean-medium programmes, or IELTS / TOEFL for English-medium programmes.

Both conditions are achievable for a well-prepared student. The process requires planning ahead by at least 8 to 12 months from your target intake date.

    Chapter 02

What about after Class 10? Can I study in Korea after 10th?

This is where many students are significantly misinformed. Korean university undergraduate programmes require a minimum of 12 years of schooling for admission. Class 10 completion alone is not sufficient for direct university entry.

However, students who have completed Class 10 have two realistic pathways:

    Pathway 1

    Complete Class 12 first

The cleanest and most direct route. Complete Class 11 and 12, meet the academic threshold, and then apply to a Korean university for an undergraduate degree. This avoids visa complications and gives you full access to all scholarship pathways including GKS.

    Pathway 2

    Korean language training (D-4 visa)

Students who have completed Class 10 may apply for a D-4 Training Visa to enrol in Korean language institutions. After completing the language programme and obtaining TOPIK certification, they may then apply for undergraduate programmes — but only once Class 12 equivalent qualifications are also in place. This route is possible but complex, and generally not advisable unless there is a specific strategic reason.

Can I study in Korea after 12th without IELTS?

Yes, and this is one of the most common questions from Indian students. There are three verified ways to secure admission to a Korean university without an IELTS score:

    • MOI certificate: If your Class 12 was taught in English (all CBSE and ISC schools, plus most State Board English-medium schools), your school can issue a Medium of Instruction certificate. This is accepted by most Korean universities as an IELTS substitute.
    • Korean-medium programme with TOPIK: Choose a programme taught in Korean and submit TOPIK Level 3 or higher. No English test required.
    • University-specific English waivers: Some universities, particularly Woosong, Jungwon, Dankook, and Anyang, offer conditional admission with an in-house English assessment or interview instead of IELTS.

    • Certificate of Admission issued by the Korean university.

    • Valid Indian passport with at least 6 months validity remaining.
    • Family relation documents, required for Indian nationals under Korean Embassy policy.

    Chapter 12

    Part-time work during your degree

Indian students on a D-2 visa are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester. During semester breaks, this restriction is lifted. Work permission must be obtained from your university's international student office before you begin work. South Korea's minimum wage in 2026 is KRW 10,030 per hour, so students working 15 hours per week can earn approximately KRW 600,000 per month, covering a meaningful portion of living expenses.

    Chapter 13

    Common questions Indian students ask

Will my State Board Class 12 result be accepted?

Yes. Korean universities accept CBSE, ISC, and State Board results. Your marks will be evaluated on a percentile basis. Ensure your school issues an official, apostilled transcript clearly stating your percentage or rank.

Is IELTS mandatory for English-taught programmes?

IELTS (6.0) or TOEFL iBT (80) is typically required for English-medium programmes. However, if your Class 12 was taught in English, which applies to all CBSE and ISC students, many Korean universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate as an IELTS substitute. Confirm this policy directly with each university.

Can I apply to multiple Korean universities simultaneously?

Yes. Under the GKS Embassy Track, you can apply to up to three universities simultaneously. Under the University Track (GKS or direct admission), applications are typically to one university at a time.
